August 4 - 8

with Marilyn MacEwen

The purpose of this class is to provide a relaxed and noncompetitive atmosphere for women to learn woodworking. The project is an attractive, tabletop cabinet that can be used to keep jewelry, CDs or other small items.
Through this medium you will learn basic furniture making techniques, workshop safety, sharpening, plan-reading, and finishing. Wood for the project will be pre-machined, slightly oversized and then dimensioned in class. For the sake of time and ease of learning, clear, straight grained linden (which is one of the softest hardwoods) will be used. Hand tools (both Japanese and western) will be emphasized.
The class will also touch upon various design elements, finishing techniques and styles.
Students are encouraged to work at their own pace and level of comfort. Along the way, we hope to leave room for personal ideas to emerge and evolve as well as ideas about the wood, the tools and the craft.
Tuition for this 5 day course is $700, including materials, use of specialized tools, meals and lodging.
